Introduction

The middle supporting structure of a multi-span bridge is called a pier. Bridge Pier Protection are divided into solid piers, column piers, and bent piers and so on. According to the plane shape, it can be divided into rectangular pier, tip pier, circular pier and so on. The materials of bridge piers can be made of wood, stone, concrete, reinforced concrete, steel and so on.

The pier is mainly composed of top cap and pier body. The abutment is mainly composed of top hat and abutment. The function of the top cap is to transmit the large and concentrated force from the bridge span support to the pier body and platform body in a scattered and symmetrical manner. Therefore, the top cap should be built with high strength materials, generally not less than 200 grade reinforced concrete buildings, and the thickness is not less than 40 cm. In addition, the top cap must have a larger plane size to provide the necessary working face for the construction and maintenance of the beam. 

The pier body and abutment are the main structures supporting the bridge span, which not only bear all the loads from the bridge span structure, but also directly bear many kinds of loads, such as earth pressure, water flow impact force, ice pressure, ship impact force and so on. therefore, the pier body and abutment have sufficient strength, stiffness and stability.
